Get to Know Karen

Karen Shlegeris

Creator of the Birth & Baby Village
Childbirth Educator, Calmbirth Educator, Pregnancy & Postnatal Yogalates Instructor, Doula and much more....

After growing up in Sydney, Karen travelled through Europe and lived in the UK in her early twenties. She explored various careers including banking, making cocktails and working in advertising in London and North Sydney. She met her husband Joe playing volleyball on the beach in Sydney, and when he was kind to a hermit crab she knew he was a caring man and decided to keep him.

When she gave birth to their first son in 1994, she was astounded by the incredible experience, and her life’s purpose was revealed. She became a Childbirth Educator and pregnancy yoga instructor. From then on, birthwork became her passion.

Four years later, her second son’s birth was even more wonderful, and affirmed her beliefs that birth can be fabulous, and that women’s bodies are incredibly clever.

Karen and Joe moved to North Queensland to raise their boys away from the city. Karen created her own special blend of pregnancy yoga combined with birth education and taught classes for 15 years. She encouraged her pregnant clients to take an active role in their birth preparation by practicing yoga, attending birth classes with their partners and also preparing for life after birth with breastfeeding and new baby classes. She attended many births as a doula and was an active member of the birthing community. Women loved returning with their babies after the birth for mums and bubs yoga and morning teas to continue their connection to each other. It astounds her to think that many of her babies from that time are now adults and starting to have babies of their own!

The heat finally got to Karen and Joe so they moved south to Noosa with their teenage boys in 2011. Karen taught from various venues until she created her dream studio in Noosaville in 2019. Birth & Baby Village became a local hub for education, exercise and support; a connected community for the hundreds of women and couples coming through its doors and the birth workers and maternity care workers who complete the birthing team.

Karen took time off from running the studio to write her new book Inspired Pregnancy, Joyful Birth, which will be released in November 2022. Karen is once again teaching classes from her home studio overlooking beautiful Lake Weyba in Noosaville and welcomes you to her village in person or online.
